Taste seasonally-inspired food, swap seeds, meet local food producers, and discover Lancaster’s bubbling local food and craft scene.
On Good Friday (30th March) from 10:00-17:00 Lancaster’s market square will be bustling with local food producers, vegetable seedlings and flowers, community food projects, music and local craftspeople, as LESS hosts Lancaster’s Spring Market.
The Spring Market is the first of four seasonal markets coordinated by LESS that aim to celebrate our surrounding environment and the diversity of produce the different seasons bring. The Spring Market will celebrate the lengthening days and the start of a new growing season with local food, crafts and music.
In addition to stalls selling their wares, Lancaster’s Seed Library will be running a seed swap and offering advice on seed saving techniques (so bring seeds to swap!) The Faces Behind Our Food art exhibition will be brought outside to share the stories of 12 local food and drink producers (some of which will be participating in the market), and Lancaster’s Sewing Café will be bring hand-powered sewing machines to the street to mend and improve well-loved clothes.
Nicola Snell, Daniel Liptrott, Jennie White and other local musicians will be singing and playing music throughout the day (expect folk music and 80s covers), and a Fairtrade Easter Egg hunt is also planned – starting from the Fig Tree stall.
Confirmed Spring Market stalls include:
- The Fig Tree who will be selling its range of locally-made and fairly traded bean-to-bar chocolates and crafts.
- Filberts Bakery will be offering their range of bread and other delicious baked goods.
- Cockerham Boers will be selling locally-reared goat meat.
- Claver Hill food project will be sharing info about their ‘no-dig’ veg, and selling locally made chutneys and jams and Marmalade made from Single Step’s surplus oranges!
- Billy’s Eggs from the Lancaster Charter market will be joining us, offering a range of local and free-range eggs and free-range local cheese.
- Bee-Inspired Flowers will bring seasonal locally grown organic cut flowers. With a little Spring warmth expect tulips, daffodils, anemones and with a bit of luck Ranucullus and early vegetables.
- The woodland Trust will be discussing the importance of trees and how you can support their work.
- The Average Cabbage will be selling healthy vegetable, salad and herb seedlings – helping you get off to a good start this growing season.
- Mepop Cakes will have a range of cupcakes and sweet treats- inspired by the colours of Spring.
- Sicily Gusto will bring the tastes of Sicily to Lancaster’s market square, offering rice balls, chickpea fritters, Italian savory pie, pizza, cannoli and tiramisu’.
- The Land Workers’ Alliance will bring information about how you can support small scale farmers through the uncertainty posed by Brexit.
- Local food businesses – River Village Foods and Paul’s Pancakes- will be cooking up falafel wraps and crepes.
Joyce John, founder of Bee-inspired flowers commented: “Spring is a time of celebration, an end to the winter months and a return of the sun and warm weather. We hit the ground running and everything accelerates so that we can produce as much as possible in the growing season. Even as a small scale grower the race to get seeds growing and the ground prepared is well on its way but the weather holds us firmly in its hands. People should attend the spring market to have a connection with local producers and [the land] and maybe glean some understanding of how seasonal [the market’s] food and flowers really are…Each market will have its seasonal treasures.”
