Grace Russell, from FoodFutures, shares what people can expect from the 2025 FarmStart Training and why they should sign up.

Applications are now open for the 2025 FarmStart training programme, designed for residents in North Lancashire who want to start new food-growing businesses. If you are passionate about becoming an organic grower or interested in organic horticulture, this is your chance to take the first step toward helping transform our local food system.

Our global food system faces many challenges, including climate change, disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical tensions that affect supply chains. Because of this, it’s important that we have strong and flexible local food systems. The FarmStart programme responds to these needs by offering a one-year, part-time training course. This initiative aligns with the broader “Our Food Futures” strategy, which aims to foster a sustainable, locally focused food economy in North Lancashire.

The FarmStart training is designed to provide practical support for aspiring growers. Access to land can be very expensive, but FarmStart enables participants to work on a certified organic farm without the need for upfront costs. By joining this initiative, you are helping to build a network of environmentally friendly farms in North Lancashire, which contributes to creating a sustainable regional food supply.

Training will occur at a small-scale market garden, allowing participants to engage in hands-on learning under the guidance of seasoned growers with over two decades of agricultural experience. You’ll gain essential skills in areas such as business planning and organic certification processes.

The FarmStart training programme also aims to emphasise the importance of community in making small farms work. Trainees in FarmStart will not only learn about sustainable agriculture but also be welcomed into a network of local food enthusiasts.

As a FarmStarter, you will commit to two days of practical training each week. This hands-on training will give you the important experience you need to succeed in regenerative organic food growing. The programme covers various topics, including crop planning, permaculture design, and horticulture principles.

In addition, participants will have access to membership of the Landworkers Alliance and potential financial support during the training period. This is a unique opportunity not just to learn but to actively shape the future of food in North Lancashire.

If you’re passionate about contributing to a fair, resilient food system that benefits local communities, we encourage you to apply for the FarmStart programme. Together, let’s sow the seeds for a sustainable future in North Lancashire.
