Taste seasonally-inspired recipes, meet local food producers, and discover Lancaster’s bubbling local food and crafts scene.


 On Friday the 16th December from 10:00-17:00 Lancaster’s market  square will be bustling with local food producers, community food  projects, music and local craftspeople, as LESS hosts Lancaster’s  first Midwinter Market.

The market is part of LESS’s ongoing ‘Growing Our Local Food  Economy’ project, and aims to celebrate the midwinter, the diversity  of local food and crafts, and bring local farmers and small i  independent businesses into the heart of Lancaster.

In addition to stalls selling their wares, Lancaster’s Sewing Café will  be running skill-share sessions on how to fix old clothes, the Faces  Behind Our Food art exhibition will be brought outside to share the  stories of 12 local food and drink producers (some of which will be participating in the market), and LESS will be handing out a variety of local food resources including seasonal local food calendars, advice on how to source a local Christmas dinner, and community food maps. The Hum Holler ‘n’ sing choir, More Music’s Chinese Ensemble and Folk to Folk will also be joining the market from12 midday.

Confirmed Midwinter Market stalls include:

  • The People’sCafé, who will be cooking up seasonally-inspired meals on a pay-as-you feel basis and running a ‘guess the weight of the Christmas cake’ competition
  • The Juicy Apple from Backsbottom Farm will be selling local heritage apples
  • Single Step will bring local veg, fair trade produce and other local food items – perfect for making Christmas hampers
  • The Borough Brewery will be selling their locally brewed and award winning beers
  • The Fig Tree will be talking about and selling its range of locally-made and fairly traded bean-to-bar chocolates
  • Filberts Bakery will be offering their range of delicious baked goods
  • Cockerham Boers will be talking about and selling locally-reared goat meat
  • Claver Hill food project will be sharing info about their ‘no-dig’ veg, and selling locally made chutneys and jams
  • The sewing café will be running skill-share sessions on fixing old clothes (so bring old clothes for mending!) and will be selling a range of locally made crafts
  • Billy’s Eggs from the Lancaster Charter market will be joining us, offering a range of local and free-range eggs
  • Morecambe’s Creative Exchange will be selling their upcycled and locally crafted goods, as will Hannah Carpenter
  • Logs Direct will be taking orders for fire wood for delivery
  • Old School brewery will be offering tasters of their beers and will be selling various goodies
  • Magma Sauces’ locally made chilli sauces will be on sale
  • Old Bell Farm’s sausage rolls and pasties will be featuring for the first time
  • Shirley’s Pies will once again be selling their enormous pie slices!

“Lancaster’s Midwinter Market is a great opportunity to meet local food producers and crafts people and find out about the sorts of food and up-cycled crafts that are available locally. A number of exciting community projects are also attending that present new ways of doing things – from offering food on a pay-as-you feel basis and growing veg in a community setting, to running skill-share repair and sewing sessions. I hope for everyone that attends the market to learn at least one new skill or fact.”
