In this week’s column, FoodFutures coordinator Anna Clayton shares a Spring Into Action update.

From 20 April – 2 May FoodFutures is coordinating a series of events across North Lancashire that invite people and organisations across the region to ‘Spring Into Action’ around creating a thriving local food system that is healthy, resilient and fair.

The latest edition to the programme includes a bring and share meal and ‘Food Circle Skill Share’ at Stanleys Community Centre in Morecambe on 21 April.

This skill share event draws on a 2025 ‘Beyond Food Banks’ discussion that came up with the idea of a food circle – bringing together a food club, allotment and/or growing spaces, chefs and a community kitchen,  composters and volunteers to create a healthy, resilient and fair local food system.

Stanleys Community Centre has started the process of turning this idea into a reality. This skill share event will share their approach and learnings and will offer the opportunity to see their growing space and food club in action.

Other events during the week include a REcommoning and Summerhouse Community Farm exhibition at The Storey in Lancaster, and a ‘Spring Food Shindig’ at Halton Mill on 25 April, which will include a community meal, foraging walk and cooking workshop, a session on creating a herb garden, a food champion induction, and chances to taste different ferments.

To build on this day of activities in Halton there will also be a  ‘Mapping Our Place’ event at The Centre@Halton on April 26 from 12- 4 with artist Sarah Hymas. Local residents are invited to drop by and bring their memories, stories and dreams of the area to capture the history and hopes of Halton

For those interested in stretching their minds, the unnamed bookclub will meet at The Gregson Centre in Lancaster on Tuesday 28 April evening to discuss the book ‘Is A River Alive?’, while the FoodFutures Reconomy steering group are organising an event on 24 April to co-design a regional approach to ‘building a regenerative economy from the ground up’.
