Growing Food & Community: preserving produce session
Would you like to dip your toes in the ancient art and practice of food preservation?
Preserving food at times of plenty can be crucial for making the most of the abundance when it is available, and can be a good way of extending the availability of food over the seasons.
This practical session will cover:
- An introduction to processing produce into chutneys and jams
- Tips on how to do this in a community setting
- Basic recipes and a chance to make preserves
Food preservation is one of the essential skills that have allowed humanity to ensure food security and prosperity in conditions that did not allow food to grow. Besides, it can make your food taste delicious! There are many different techniques of food preservation including dehydrating, canning, pickling, fermenting, pasteurising, and making alcohol. A lot of these can be done safely at home and are ideal methods to reduce food waste.
In this workshop on 20th September, 10am-1pm you will get an excellent introduction to this practice from our team of local experts that will present all the basics you need to know about safe food preservation, resulting in tasty, healthy dishes and drinks that are good for you and the planet.
Date: Saturday 20 September 2025 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Location: The Centre, St Thomas, Marton Street, Lancaster

This event is part of the Growing Food, Growing Community series of workshops, and of Share the Harvest, a month-long festival celebrating locally grown varieties of apples and pears, rescuing unharvested fruit and raising awareness of food waste through a range of community events. FoodFutures and the Closing Loops project invite everyone in North Lancashire to pitch in and harvest, preserve, celebrate and of course eat apples, pears and other seasonal produce this autumn.
