Landed Community Kitchens are spaces for shared meals that are cooked with locally grown food, by local people.

This is about more than just tasty meals.

It’s about bringing people around the table. It’s about connecting communities and giving people a say in what they eat, and how they eat.

As a partner of the Northern Landed Community Kitchens (LCK) pilot, we trialed a model for implementing self-sustaining agroecological community meals in the Lancaster District. Rather than hosting LCKs from a new space, we worked with existing community groups and centres to host the meals. We also held pop-up ‘kitchens’ at markets to reach more people.

The aims were to:

  • Demonstrate what LCKs could look like in Lancaster District and connect communities with local producers;
  • Support a network of volunteers / chefs with the skills and confidence to explore the Landed Community Kitchens as an element of community food provision;
  • Use the pilot to understand the opportunities and challenges for the LCK approach locally.
