The Closing Loops project is supporting the emergence of a regenerative economy in North Lancashire. A regenerative economy is one which meets real community needs (such as food, energy, housing, social connection) whilst caring for and restoring the health of the natural systems we all rely on.

We need to go beyond sustainability

We are at a point where our local and global ecosystems are polluted and damaged. Wealth inequalities are growing; communities are fractured and mental health challenges are on the rise. Sustaining this current state is simply not good enough. It calls for us to go beyond sustaining – to heal and bring life back to our communities, damaged lands and oceans. This calls for us to learn from ancient and new ways of being and to learn how to place health and wellbeing at the centre of every decision. It also calls for us to protect healthy ecosystems, public services and community spaces that remain.

A regenerative economy in North Lancashire

An economy is made up of different organisations and enterprises – from businesses to anchor institutions to community groups. All have a role in  building community health, wealth and resilience.

A regenerative economy will look different depending on place, resources available and the needs of community. How it looks in North Lancashire will be specific to this place – however, there are underlying ‘regenerative’ principles that can guide us. There are also many examples of regenerative enterprise and economies around the world that we can learn from.

This webpage is for anyone who is interested in learning about and working towards regeneration. It draws on the Closing Loops Regenerative Economy strategy which has guided the work so far. It is an invitation for you to join the journey.
