Over April 2025 writer/artist Sarah Hymas talked with people who live, work and play on The Ridge & Claver Hill and The Marsh & Freeman’s Woods to gather stories, memories, celebrations, encounters, wishes, and anything else that people wanted to map of their place.

Thank you to all who shared their stories and drawings.

Across the Ridge: the After School Club and Knit and Natter group at the Community Centre, members of Ambleside Allotments and Claver Hill.
On the Marsh: the Older Ladies group and Sewing Club at the Community Centre, Lancaster Steiner School, and walkers in Freeman’s Woods.

What they’ve shared reveals the rich and diverse nature of these places. Have a look at the maps and read the stories related to each drawing in the key.

There’ll always be more stories to add. If you have something you’d like to contribute – with words, a drawing and / or a symbol – click this link to add your own story through this google form.

We have printed a limited edition of 100 Risograph prints of each map. If you’d like one please email Rachel (rachel_CL@lessuk.org) to see if there are any left.

You can also download this A4 Make Your Own Map zine if you’d like to try mapping your place.
