From shopping locally, to getting involved in events, networking, or growing your own food, there are loads of ways to pledge your support for North Lancashire’s Gold Sustainable Food Places campaign, writes Nick Lakin…

Several people and organisations have already pledged their support for the campaign, which will run throughout 2026 (see the video above for more information).

The campaign focuses on building a more sustainable and just local food system from the ground up, and developing Lancaster District Food Justice Partnership’s (LDFJP) Food Ladders approach.

Lizzi Collinge, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, pledged to support community growing, in particular the concept of food circles, where people can grow, cook, eat and compost their own food.

Coun Caroline Jackson, leader of Lancaster City Council, said that she is passionate about growing her own food, and pledged to support the campaign in a professional capacity by helping to organise and support the new North Lancs Food Alliance Gathering in 2026.

Kathy Barton, from Claver Hill, pledged that during the ‘hunger gap’ when the winter crops start to fade and the summer crops aren’t ready yet, she will reduce her food miles and support the local economy by shopping locally and avoiding supermarkets.

Joanna Young, chief executive at Citizens Advice North Lancashire, pledged to ensure that her clients continue to be aware that emergency food is always available to those in need, and to work in partnership with the LDFJP to support the campaign.

Local Food Systems consultant Henry Russell’s pledge involves connecting up farmers and growers using the initiatives that FoodFutures is already working on, such as the Gather Food Hub, so that farmers and growers can sell directly to the citizens of North Lancashire, to create a thriving local food system.

And Nina Osswald, from the Closing Loops project, which works to reduce waste and build a regenerative economy in North Lancashire, said that her pledge as the project’s engagement coordinator is to make sure that Share The Harvest in 2026 is bigger and more exciting than ever before, to reach more people and involve more community groups in running activities around surplus food.
