“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?”
As we enter the darker months of the year, and leaves continue to fall from the trees we live beside, LESS is busy preparing for Lancaster’s Midwinter Market.
On Friday 13th December from 10:00-17:00 Lancaster’s Midwinter Market will return to Lancaster’s central market square for the fourth year running; showcasing local food and drink producers, woodworkers, community food projects and local craftspeople.
We are still seeking more stalls, street demos and musicians to entertain, so please email firstname.lastname@example.org by the 16th November if you are interested in joining Lancaster’s MIdwinter Market.
Confirmed Midwinter Market stalls (so far) include:
Claver Hill food project will have ‘no-dig’ herbs and winter salads on sale, surplus potatoes, local food themed calendars and locally made chutneys and jams and oils- made from locally grown fruit and veg and flowers. All money raised will directly support this community food project located off the Ridge Estate in Lancaster.
The Fig Tree will be selling their locally-made and fairly traded bean-to-bar chocolates, including a range of vegan chocolates. A wide variety of Fairtrade gifts will also be brought along.
Backsbottom Farm will have a selection of their more than 100 heritage apple varieties – all sourced from the farm’s mature agro-forestry system near Wray. A range of wooden chopping boards will also be on sale, alongside apple tasting.
Logs Direct will be taking orders for fire wood, including a range of ‘eco logs’. And the Woodland Trust will be handing out information about their work protecting and regenerating British woodlands, including how you can get involved.
Cockerham Boers will be selling locally-reared free range goat meat, and the Old School Brewery will have locally-brewed beer tasters and various gift packs.
Warm street food will be dished up by Paul’s pancakes and the Veg Man’s falafel stall.
We are also hopeful that Filberts Bakery, Cut The Wrap, Billy’s Eggs and the Graft Project will attend along with a blacksmith (expect live demonstrations!). We will confirm additional stalls and activities over the next month.
LESS’s Season Markets
The Midwinter Market is one of three annual seasonal markets organised by LESS that celebrate the seasons whilst bringing local residents in direct contact with local land workers and community food initiatives – building relationships and a local solidarity network. The markets also facilitate direct trading; supporting and strengthening our local sustainable food and crafts economy.
The Midwinter Market therefore presents itself as a great opportunity for sourcing food and drink and ‘sustainable’ gifts for the festive season.
