In this week’s column, Kathryn Bain explains why she joined the FoodFutures FoodFriends lottery scheme, and why you should too!

I joined FoodFriends some years ago at a market stall promoting the project.

I was enticed by a free entry into a draw for a food hamper for anyone joining on the day.

To my surprise I learned a few days later that I had won the draw – a good start!

Since then, I have won the monthly voucher three times – I must be on a lucky streak!

I used the first voucher to shop at Single Step and then the second one to have a lunch with my daughter at Pure Vegan – a delicious meal thoroughly enjoyed.

More recently I won another voucher which I will use to take my daughter for lunch at The Herbarium – one of my favourite cafes in Lancaster.

But for me, it was never about winning vouchers when I signed up for FoodFriends.

I love the ethos and values the project represents and believe that when given an opportunity to do small things to help good causes we should do so.

Small acts of support can make a big difference if many people contribute.

So even if I hadn’t been so lucky with the monthly draw, I would still consider my small contribution to be money well spent.

I enjoy knowing that my subscription helps The Plot and FarmStart programme towards its goal.

Food is life – it’s never been more important to pay attention to what we eat, how it is grown and the cost to the planet of unsustainable farming practices.

So, joining Food Friends is a no-brainer!
