Spring finally feels like it’s springing, and what better way to celebrate that than attending one of FoodFutures’ many Spring Into Action events and workshops scheduled over the next two weeks?!

The programme is jam-packed with food related activities and sessions across North Lancashire, and this weekend, there’s lots going on in Halton with Halton Spring Food Shindig on Saturday April 25, and then Halton: Mapping Our Place on Sunday April 26.

Halton Spring Food Shindig will be taking over Halton Mill with food and drink tasting (including cider!), tours of Lancaster Co-housing, forage walks, herb garden activities, workshops, a seasonal cafe, and a community meal which everyone is invited to!

The food for the meal will be prepared using foraged items from the banks of the River Lune.

There are still spaces available for ‘planting a herb garden’, where you’ll be able to help plant the Mill’s new herb garden, find out more about herbs and how to care for them.

There are also still places available for a unique tour of Lancaster Co-housing, next door to the mill, which will focus on a new seed library, communal herb pots, the Good Food Coop, shared meals, the collection of food waste and glorious compost!

Fred Ayers from Lune Valley Beekeepers will also be hosting a talk and presentation on the invading Yellow Legged Asian Hornet, the risks it presents to those growing their own food, and steps to limit its spread.

Finally, Anna Clayton from FoodFutures will host a Food Champions Induction workshop, which will offer an overview of how FoodFutures works, the different projects and how they sit within the network.

The Shindig event is free to enter but individual sessions (including the community meal) need to be booked in advance via this link: https://foodfutures.org.uk/spring-into-action-2026/.

Mapping Our Place – Halton, will take place on Sunday April 26 at The Centre@Halton in Low Road.

Local residents are invited to drop by the mapping site outside at The Centre between 12pm and 4pm, and share their memories, stories and dreams of the area to capture the history and hopes of Halton.

Local artist Sarah Hymas will then use the information to support potential future events and activities in the village.
