There’s a plot afoot to grow more seasonal fruit and vegetables locally, contributing to healthier options, at lower prices, with less of a carbon footprint, right here on the edges of our towns.
For just £5 per month you can support these exciting new projects, the first being The Plot, a sustainable market garden that will supply seasonal produce to the area – grown right down the road. Your membership also enters you to win one of six monthly prizes – a voucher to use with one of our local food partners. So, not only does your membership contribute to a vision of a thriving local food system for North Lancashire, it also supports a local business which the prizes are purchased from.
Only 500 FoodFriends are needed to build lasting support for these endeavors. Your monthly membership can make a huge difference, you can also gift a year-long membership as a gift. More information about The Plot and becoming a FoodFriend can be found at www.The-Plot.uk.
The Plot has established its first market garden location at Old Holly Farm, the first of hopefully many new small-scale farms around the town and city fringes of North Lancashire. The aim is to bring more options to our kitchens, shops, cafes and restaurants. Seasonal, local, organic produce is a key factor in tackling the climate emergency – requiring less transportation, energy for heating greenhouses, and pesticides in growing and procurement. The shorter distance of farm to table hopes to reduce food waste and support the local economy. Working collaboratively with other local producers to ensure it is complementary, rather than competitive, The Plot plans crops and effective local distribution channels.
The Plot is also the training ground for ‘FarmStarters’, enthusiastic gardeners thinking about transferring their skills to small-scale grower. In the future, FoodFriends funding will also help such individuals to establish sustainable farms, to continue the growth of this small-scale farming movement locally.
Each small-scale farm requires land, capital, time and resources to reclaim and prepare for commercial growing using organic principles. A membership fee of £5 per month will go great lengths to help The Plot thicken!
