This week’s column is written by Yiorgos – the chef behind the Little Greek Kitchen.
“The story behind the Little Greek Kitchen started in 2015 in Lancaster Market square. For three years I had a stall selling raw Greek honey that I had produced as a beekeeper in Greece – just before I moved to the UK. I also served fresh Greek doughnuts with honey”.
“A year later I started serving Greek hot food. I decided to specialise in Greek pita gyros, which is the most common street food in Greece. In doing so, I started to build up a reputation in Lancaster for serving good quality food. I also started to feel at home”.
“By having a stall on Lancaster’s charter market, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people. This really helped me to settle in Lancaster. I especially liked Saturdays when lots of people came down to town and there was a jolly atmosphere in the air. But I also won’t forget those gloomy days when the weather was awful and only a few turned up at the market”.
“In 2019 I decided the time had come to set up my very own cafe/takeaway. The Little Greek Kitchen found a permanent home at 47 Moorgate in Freehold, a few steps away from the well known Gregson pub and community centre”.
“It started with a simple take-away menu based on Greek pita wraps and salad. This has now expanded to include a good variety of vegetarian dishes such as moussakas and spinach pies as well as vegan dishes such as chickpea fritters. We also love to serve authentic Cypriot food such as the seftalia burger, which has become one of the most popular dishes on the menu”.
“We mainly operate as a take-away but there is also a little seating area with a few tables where customers are welcome to be served”.
“With regards to the Coronavirus situation, our business has managed to stay open by taking all the necessary precautions according to the guidance from the Environmental Health Department. We have also mostly relied on drop-off deliveries”.
“From the 1st December, we will be serving lunch as well as breakfast and hot drinks. We will be open from morning to evening”.
“Our menu is available at www.littlegreekkitchenonline.com where people can order online for delivery or collection. On our Facebook page you can also find more information about our food and also check what people say about us”.
